Garage Sales and Trash Picking

May 6th, 2006 at 02:57 am

Talked to DD's. Have 2 committed to going out tomorrow morning with mom to garage sale! Not really looking for too much, except for clothes for them and maybe some stuff for the lawn/garden. Been looking for two years for a bicycle pump for DH.
Got an exciting freebie today. I have been inspired by lots of you on the site to hang clothes, but my neighborhood is too snooty to allow clothes lines. So I was going to look into buying 2 racks I could set on the deck. Lo and behold walking past the neighbors garbage today on the way home from the bus stop - a drying rack. Quickly trash picked it and ran. Can't figure out how to put it up, its probably broken. Will put hubby on it to jerry-rig it to usefulness!
Good luck to everyone having sales tomorrow! I will let you know if I find any treasures!

I've decided my inner circle of friends all need to know the many definitions of jerry-rigging anything!!! Smile Loved seeing that term in your blog here.

I've got a local hardware store, that I can take something in and the staff will ask if I need a certain thing, or could they jerry rig it?? Love that!!

Anyone know where this term started?? I grew up with it, probably heard it as often as please & thank you!

I believe it is a sailing term, something to do with repairing the sails or ropes after a storm, so torn ones would work. But don't quote me on that.

Okay, I looked it up, jerry-rig is a derivation of jury-rig.
From jury-rig, jury-rigging, improvised rigging on a ship, modeled on jury-mast, temporary mast, perhaps ultimately from Old French ajurie, help, from aider, to help.

    Also: a temporary fix.

Excellent on the garage sales and the drying rack! Mine is jerry rigged, too; there's a mini bungee cord holding one side together where a bit of wood broke off.

One suggestion: think gifts at garage sales. You might be surprised that there are items you can give at Christmas or birthdays. yeah, it's a little early, but I'd rather spend two doillars in May than twenty in December.
