Are the lessons worth it?

January 8th, 2007 at 07:43 pm

For the last year my youngest has been taking piano and my middle taking voice lessons. We are actually picking up a new piano teacher, (not cheaper, but not more expensive and she will come to the house)and DD3 will take from both teachers for a couple of weeks until she decides which one works best for her. But since finances are so tight,I have to consider letting this go. DD2 is only taking for pleasure and not for advancement or career. DD3 is very talented and I think it could be really useful to her later to persue this, but how do you pick one over the other?
For now, I will suck it up and pay for DOUBLE lessons, because it is already budgeted, but it sure would make a NICE bag of groceries!!

Looks like time saved driving and the gas and wear and tear on vehicle would be a big savings too.

Hard to make those cuts. The age of the girls might make a difference. My CashHappyson wanted guitar lessons at about age 14 - we paid for a few, he wasn't diligent to practice, so no more UNTIL he's ready to pay for them himself. So far he hasn't been willing to pony up!

Are your girls of an age to pay for their own lessons?

Does DD2 want to do it? Maybe she wouldn't care if it was taken away. Also, can you make a deal with the teacher? The fact that she's getting two for one, maybe you can talk her into a 20% discount (or something) on the second student.

Also, how well do you know the teacher? Is there something you can do (sew, cook) and barter with her? Good luck!

Do the kids participate in other activities or is this their only thing? If it is their only thing, I'd be loathe to cut it. But if they are doing several things, well, the budget constraints say they must choose. Is the more talented child capable of teaching her sister what she learns in her own lesson? That might be a way to go as well.

when i was little, i thought the piano lessons were wasteful and boring, but when i got older, i really enjoyed and loved to go to the lessons.
