Costly Car

January 18th, 2007 at 06:03 am

We've been trying to get the old Toyota to pass inspection, even going as far as taking it in to have it preinspected to see if it would cost us too much, so we could decide whether to sell it or fix it. We were told new tires and all looked good (except for the muffler we already new had to be replaced.) So we did the tires and the muffler and when I took it in to get inspected, IT FAILED!! Now they want another $200 for brakes. They also said windshield wipers (they wanted 11.99 for one, we did both for $5 at Walmart), and they said the muffler was not done correctly up to code. So DH will take it back to the muffler place to be redone and see if they will do a passing inspection on it. Cross your fingers!

Only grocery shopping planned tomorrow.

Also, tomorrow DH's company is having a big meeting about how they did in 2006 and since DH was the top producer they are supposed to give him kudos. Hopefully they will give him something else too (money, trip, watch???) We'll see, he is making THEM lots of money!

    Hmm....

$200 or so doesn't seem too bad to keep a car running? But then, I don't any more detail about the car than that. Besides, brakes is one of those things on a car I wouldn't hesitate to get it fixed. And until it's fixed, I hope you guys aren't using that vehicle too much.

We have to get safety and emissions inspections every year on our cars here in Missouri. You must do these to get your plates updated. Inspections for safety are about $18 and emissions is $24, then fees of about $50 to the state for a two year sticker.
And BA, the brakes are $250, the tires were $250 and the muffler was $250, so that is $750!! We didn't quite budget that much for this event! :-) Oh well, it will keep it going another for another two years and then we can hand it down to DD1!
And the brakes are fine, they are saying that there are cracks on the brake lines??? Would'nt we see leakage?? I don't know.

Still, brakes, muffler and tires are all standard equipment that need periodic replacement, and if that's all it takes to keep it going for a while longer, it's still really far cheaper than purchasing another vehicle, I imagine.

Oh yes, $750 at once is a little much, but to keep it going for another 2 years is okay. We just wish the mechanics had given us the heads up on the brake lines!
