Called Charter about paring down the cable/phone/internet bill

August 21st, 2008 at 02:23 am

Very interesting. We pay about $120 for cable/phone/internet each month. It is a bundle package from charter. Yes, we could have expanded basic cable and no digital. We don't really use it. No, I do not want to go back to dial up, as it makes it too difficult to sell on ebay, but I would if I HAD to. No, we can not cut home phone service and just use cell phones. My youngest does not have a cell phone. The older two do, but they pay for it themselves, we don't. I would not feel right leaving them home alone with no phone service, I think it would be irresponsible. Anyway, I asked the lady if I cut digital and just had extended basic and phone/intenet, what would it save me? NOTHING! I would be MORE! Smile Can you believe it? YES! $137.00! Then she offered me the new package which comes with everything we already have, plus 2 movie channels and it will be about .60 cents cheaper than we are paying! At least she did save me some money!

Yeah, that's how they had me too, because they told me my phone/internet BUNDLE is cheaper than trying to get something cut because I lose their bundle discount or something.

    Frankly, I think it's a scam.

But the only way to get out of it is to find a completely different provider, and I don't know if that's possible in your case.

Lucky for me, my disputed items are only phone and internet (not cable), and I could indeed find cheaper providers.

have you ever tried to threaten canceling to get the promotional rate? I have successfully done this with Comcast. As the previous poster said, it may only work if there is competition in your area.

So have you thought about just getting rid of cable all together and just having phone and Internet service? Saved me a bundle when we did it and we don't miss the cable at all.

Hey, for your phone service-- if you have cable service invest in magicjack-- plugs into a USB port-- and it's 30.00 a YEAR, yes, A YEAR and has all the bells and whistles of any regular phone service. www.magicjack.com -- I sound like a spam but I've had mine almost a year with no problems at all-- go do it you will thank me for it;-)

Charter got me on this same scam $161 a month. Magic jack does not deal with inbound calls. I have decided to Build a server for my house and go with skype and their usb phone adatper $2.95/month to replace the phone Service. To replace the Cable TV I'm using Hulu--> Netflix--> Youtube--> Streamed into a PS3 via PlayON Media Server. For everthing else I'm using Tversity Media Server. I dont know how to get around them for the internet service yet. So now my bill is $30 a month. The media voip server was built out of stuff I had.
