Spoiling the kids

August 11th, 2006 at 08:10 pm

I have been spending way too much money on the kids this last week. I want to treat them to nice things and get them ready to send to school.
Today I took them to the beauty salon. DD1 got a eyebrow wax and nail buff and polish. DD2 just got the eyebrow wax. I just remember how much I got picked on in school, so I want them not to have to go through that. I don't make them the best dressed or anything, I just want them to blend in. They are all sweet, smart girls and I like them to feel good about themselves. We still only buy sale, or resale clothes and I make them buy over and above what they want. Hopefully, they are taking in the right message....save when you can, splurge sometimes.
I think I overpaid off one of my accounts by about $90. I'm sure they don't reimburse you for this, so I guess we will have to get a few oil changes! I guess I was'nt thinking straight!

$76 to get your daughters' eyebrows cleaned up and for one of them to get her nails polished? I do think you might want to look deeper into what you mentioned about having been teased yourself (because of your appearance?) and wanting the girls to feel good about themselves. How about if you teach them to tweeze their own eyebrows and polish their own nails? Then they will have some competencies. Feeling good about themselves will really be based on themselves approving of themselves---not on whether they are able to get to a salon and pay to have someone else manipulate their faces and fingers....I speak as someone who grew up with a fingernail deformity! It is quite possible for a girl to feel good about herself without salon visits. Please consider that you might be teaching your girls to NOT feel good about themselves unless they purchase cosmetic services.

And you say you are making them buy more than they want? Careful, there.

DD2 had a bushy unibrow that no amount of plucking would have helped! DD1 does tweeze her own brows and polishes her own nails all the time! I wanted them to feel pampered and special for a day. A back to school treat. I have girlie girls! And in that amount it included tip and some product I let DD1 purchase for her hair. No, it is not V05 with a coupon that they use at home, it was something special, one time.
By making them buy over and above the amount, I meant we set a limit for something and if they want extra, they pay for it out of their own money. Making them buy more than they want would be SILLY!

I thought you meant making them buy more than they wanted to, too, but that didn't make sense according to the way you usually write. My mother always gave us $100 for back to school clothes and anything more than that we had to pay for ourselves. It was a good system.

You know, I've never had the eyebrow wax, though I've been tempted. Mine all go the right direction but they do want to grow across the bridge of the nose and become one. I've always just shaved it there or used Nads or something like that. Didn't really have to shape them because they had a decent shape with no weirdos sticking out. I'm not self-concious anymore if I start to go monobrow but I sure was in high school. Though it was never as bad in high school as it was as an adult.

I do understand wanting to prevent your child from getting teased. Rose runs towards the chubby but only in her stomach, so I make sure her clothes all disguise that area. The peasant tops are great for that. She doesn't get teased often, only when she wears those stupid shirts that taper inwards instead of go down straight. Those were hand me downs and she doesn't wear them to school anymore.

I think it's a wonderful to be able to treat your girls to a 'girly day' once in awhile! I love to go to the spa with my best friend, and we look forward to taking our daughters when they're old enough. As long as you're not using grocery money or going into debt for it, I say enjoy yourselves!

As a mom we just "know" what our kids need to boost their self confidence - don't worry about the expense if it is appreciated. I think that although we are trying to get out of debt/spend less we need to still enjoy life.
You have a balance with the clothes spending so don't worry about the first comment from Joan Smile Our kids are kids for such a short time - enjoy!
