How to survive a student driver!! : - )

December 2nd, 2007 at 12:07 am

Oh help! Wink The DD1 has received her drivers permit (are these people crazy???). Just kidding! I took drivers ed and learned from a stranger. I think that was the way to go! Unfortuneately our school drivers ed program is around $300 and is not highly recommended. So my DH and I are the "teachers" and that is hard when your kids tend to think you are stupid about the time they turn 10. So... other than lots of prayers... any suggestions??

Sorry I have been absent from the blogs. I have been getting our financial (and pitiful) house in order. 2008 is going to have the be the year I go back to work and get this debt paid off!

Oh...wow...I remember those days! I had to be the one to teach our kids to drive. That is an experience! I had to teach both the book stuff and the driving stuff. And DS started out on a manual drive. The hardest part for me was the driving on the highways and other higher speeds. The frustrating part for me was that I had a hard time convincing them to start the stopping process WAY before you have to slam on the brake behind another car. I wish I had some good advice. How about just a lot of sympathy and well wishes!

Oh man, as a grad student, I helped teach a college age friend of mine to drive. I had the advantage that she was a nervous driver, so not reckless. Reckless teenager not quite understanding that you're hurling a 2 ton vehicle at a great rate of speed? Sounds like you are made of sterner stuff than I am!

I am thinking that you and your DH want to be together for the first few times with your DD, and come up with a united driving style front.

    Patience. Calm.

One of my best "looking back on my life" memories of my mother occured when she took me out driving for the first time ever. I misjudged a turn and went on to a neighbor's front yard (no damage done, thank goodness). Mom calmly said, "Don't panic. Look both ways, then SLOWLY back up." I'm still so impressed that she was able to stay calm.

Mom & I have shared lots of laughs over the years remembering that incident.
