CC due dates moving BACKWARDS!

February 21st, 2008 at 06:41 pm

Yes, I have to keep a close eye on this. My Citi card payment has been moving backward. I make a budget each month and write down payment due and due date. Now I know that a due date can change because of the weekend or holiday, but then it has been staying earlier the next month and if it adjusts again, it stays even earlier! So yes, I had to pay $39.00 in a late fee. So far they have not raised my interest rate because of it, but I am keeping an eye on it. So I looked at my March budget and made sure to back up the payment AGAIN so it won't be late next month. Tricky sons of guns are'nt they??

I did make my first "snowflake" payment to the American Express. Yeah! March will be sooooo tight unless we get the amended tax return money, that I will have to be very creative making REGULAR payments, let alone any snowflake payments, but I will try!! I took a couple days babysitting jobs. It doesn't pay much, but it is better than nothing!!

Oooh, Citibank is doing the same thing to me! Sneaky, aren't they? I'll be so glad when the CC payments are gone for good!

If you can swing it....pay the minimum the day the bill comes in. That way you are never worried about the due date. You can always pay more later in the month.

This has helped me avoid late fees over the years!

    love your blog!

Did you get a change of terms that spelled out a change in due dates?

My due dates tend to change quite frequently but I have had them go in both directions. Nothing quite makes me scowl like realizing I have paid the cc too early so I have to make another payment (this time within the new billing cycle) I wasn't counting on.

I honestly have never paid attention to any pattern to the due dates. I get the bill and I make sure I pay it on time, whatever that time might be. Just out of curiosity, I just checked my most recent Marriott Visa bill (Chase) and it was due 2/18. I pulled my 2007 bills and they were all due on the 18th or 19th, so nothing has changed. Like I said, though, I wouldn't have noticed if they had. All I pay attention to is when each bill is due so I pay it on time.

If you pay it online, then you can set up automatic payments. It will only take out the minimum due at that time, but then you can later go and make a larger payment if you are able to. This way the only thing you have to worry about is making sure you have money in the account to cover it.

    Hmmm... lots of thoughts here!
*Joan - no, no change in terms or conditions
*Caoineag - I bet different CC companies do different things
*Steve - I don't get paper bills in the mail, it is by paperless in an email
*Laura - I do pay online, but I go by the dates we get paid on. They are never consistent. I make out a PREDETERMINED budget for the next month and approx pay dates by the days we are paid. Whew!
*Lynnae - if you hadn't already pulverized your CC's we could have had a burning party together! Ewwww Citi!!
*Dane - thanks for the blog compliement!

If you have lots of credit cards and would find it easier to pay them all at roughly the same time, i understand that you can ask a card issuer to move your due date. They're not required to do so, mind you, but they sometimes will.

Same thing. Either way, I would just pay by the due date, whatever that happened to be.

It sounds like you are going paycheck to paycheck, though. If so, I understand how a shifting due date could pose a problem. Just keep plugging away until you can build up a little surplus so that the due date is no longer an issue. You'll get there soon.

You can get your credit accounts like AMEX to send you alerts about your payment and due dates, I have CITI send my balance to my cell phone every morning. This might help.
